STATEMENT OF PURPOSE |
I have been working with children and teenagers long before I even knew what I was doing. From simply being the oldest sibling to becoming a Youth Leader at my church, working for Kids After Hours, and volunteering for the Lakeland STARs Tutor Program at the University of Maryland, I have gained a lot of experience in working with children and youth of separate social circles to resolve conflicts, facilitate social interaction, and create bonds.

I carry a lot of passion for being a mentor for the children and youth of tomorrow, but also for adding to my knowledge and skills and trying new things. While the media scholars program isn't related to my major, I have learned so much more about myself; I have found new interests and learned about the role media plays in society. I now manage my church's social media page and I hope to learn more about how media impacts us in this program.

I wouldn't be the same person if I didn't join Media Scholars. With the time I have left in this program and at the University of Maryland, I hope to learn more about the media's role in our advancing world, but also to learn more about myself and how I can continue to contribute to our society.
SCHOLARS REFLECTION ESSAY |
I joined Media Scholars as a shy freshman and I am leaving as a completely changed person. This program has taught me so much about myself, my role in society, and how critical media is in our world. I have learned new skills, such as how to analyze news and media coverage and how to be more critical of media consumption. I have increased my communication and social skills with the thanks of Scholars, and without them, I would have never met my best friends. I hope to continue using what I learned in this program to continue impacting others, educating myself, and learning more about the world we live in.
